Chapter 5

Julie jerked away from him. He growled, but she didn't pay any attention to him as she scrambled to grab her robe from the floor.

"Were you expecting someone?"

"No," she said. She shook her head. "He's not supposed to…"

She covered her mouth with her trembling hand. Even if he couldn't smell her fear overriding the sweet aroma of her fading arousal, he would have been able to see the panic in her eyes, which were now showing an obscene amount of white. Whoever she thought was at the door scared her.

He would not allow that.

He turned on his heel and marched to her front door. He swung it open. A blast of winter air assaulted him.

Huddled on Julie's front step was a man. Judging by his short stature and the hollows of his gaunt cheeks, he didn't seem like much of a threat to Brad. Snow coated the intruder's coat and hat, making him appear rather comical. Except Brad wasn't laughing. The stink of whiskey and beer coated the icy air.

"Who are you?" Brad demanded. He crossed his arms and glared at the man.

The stranger moved to enter Julie's house, but Brad stepped in front of him, blocking his way.

Julie peered around him. Her strangled gasp was enough for Brad. He shoved the man back and slammed the door in his face.

His wolf fought forward. Fur pricked over his skin, but he forced the beast back.

"Who was that?"

Tears filled Julie's eyes. "He found me. Oh, God."

Brad stepped forward and hauled her into his embrace. "He won't hurt you, I promise you that. But I need to know who he is."

"He's my ex…" She trembled in his arms. "I didn't think he'd find me. I didn't—"

Behind him, the door swung open as the man crashed into Julie's front entry.

"What the hell, Jules, I come all this way on an overcrowded bus and this is the welcome I get?" The man blundered forward. "Who the fuck is this?"

Brad faced the man, making sure Julie was behind him. "Get out of here. You will regret it if you don't leave quietly."

Brad's control over his primitive instinct to protect her at all costs was slipping by the millisecond. Under any other situation, he'd have already shifted and have the man's throat gripped in his teeth. But he hadn't told Julie yet. He hadn't the opportunity to explain about his being a werewolf to her.

"Get out of my way." The man swatted at Brad. "I'm here to get my wife and bring her home."

The wolf growled. The man paused.

"What are you?" The man blinked at Brad.

"We're divorced, Nevin," Julie said. "You aren't allowed here. You are breaking the law just being here."

"Fuck that." The man pushed forward and grabbed for Julie.

"Julie," Brad said through clenched teeth. "Go back to your bedroom."

"No, you don't know him. He'll hurt you," she said. Her words were shaky. "I'm calling the police." Although Brad didn't look away from the intruder, he could hear Julie was retrieving a phone.

"Stop that," Nevin said.
